Mission Statement
It is the mission of Saddlebred Rescue, Inc. to educate the public on concerns facing the saddle seat breeds and to save these unwanted horses from slaughter, returning them to useful, productive lives.
Each year many American Saddlebreds will be sold through various means. The well-intentioned owner often believes that their horse is headed to a loving new home. Although this is true in most cases, a frightening number of Saddlebreds and Morgans end up on trucks, slaughter-bound to Canada and Mexico. Any horse is fair game for the slaughterhouse: foals, pregnant mares, pleasure and show horses. With processed horse meat bringing over $50 per pound, there is a huge market.
Our goal is to make a difference by educating the public, our youth, the horse industry and the animal protection networks (who are becoming more involved in the prevention of cruelty to horses) on the problem of slaughter-bound horses. We aim to provide alternatives and services to the dealers and livestock auctions, including the rehabilitation and re-homing of these at-risk horses. Saddlebred Rescue assists in the placement and care of horses from a variety of distressed situations, including neglected and abused animals seized through animal law enforcement agencies as well as privately-owned Saddlebreds, Hackneys and Morgans.
We are starting programs to help ensure future generations will know about and cherish our wonderful breed and all they can do. Programs include “Kids Care”, where youth groups are encouraged to support our efforts and learn to take care of their own horses, as well as “The Pegasus Project”, which will enlist the rescues in teaching those in need the joy of driving.
Various locations will be established around the country where rescues will be utilized to help people enjoy and learn from them. Those in need may include families of armed forces member serving overseas, the mentally ill or the physically abused or disabled.
We believe every Saddlebred, Morgan and Hackney deserves a safe and caring home to live out its life. Saddlebred Rescue, Inc. does not pass judgment on any person or sect of people. We are here to help the horses. We understand the need for people to buy and sell horses, and realize that not all horses are suitable for riding or driving and that not all people can afford to maintain them as companion horses. We are here to offer an alternative. We strongly urge all sellers to keep registration papers with the horse.
